Hair Up

A cylindrical circle that is not completely closed. There are two knobs on each side where the circle ends. A hair tie is fitted around the tool.

Hair Up is a 3D printed tool that helps someone with fine motor skills put their hair up independently. After iterating through 6 designs, the third design ended up the most successful in aiding someone with fine motor weaknesses to tie their hair back. Check out my weekly blog updates to see the progression of designs and how I learned from each iteration.

You can download and print my design for free on Thingiverse! The recommended print settings can be found in the description of the Thingiverse posting.

How to use

  1. Wrap the elastic around both pegs.
  2. Slide your hand through the elastic. The tool should rest against the back of your hand/wrist.
  3. Gather your hair into the hand with the tool. Once the hair is grasped, pull the handle of the tool outwards and pull your hair through the elastic.
  4. You can let go of the tool or readjust your hands. Then twist the tool to create a triangle-shaped loop with the elastic. With your free hand, push your hair through the triangle-shaped loop.
  5. Depending on how stretchy your elastic is, you can either let go of the tool and tighten your ponytail or repeat step 4 until your ponytail is secure enough.
